EA Hit By Hackers; Source Code For FIFA 21 And Frostbite Engine Stolen

Electronic Arts

Electronic Arts had just announced its latest game in the form of Battlefield 2042. But it looks like sometime after the official announcement, the publisher was hit by hackers. Said hackers also made off with 780GB of data from the company’s servers.

Vice reports that the data stolen from EA includes source codes from FIFA 21, and also the Frostbite engine. For the former, in addition to the game’s code, hackers also made off with code for its matchmaking server. As for the latter, it’s the game engine made by the publisher’s developer subsidiary DICE. And it powers many of its titles including the very recently announced Battlefield 2042.

CNET has acquired a statement from EA that says the video games publisher has indeed been hit by hackers. The company also noted that this was not a ransomware attack, and that no player data was stolen as part of the breach. The company also said that it doesn’t expect any “impact on our games or our business”.

The report states that the hackers are already trying to sell the data stolen from EA. Just as with the recent hack that CD Projekt suffered, there will likely be someone out there who would pay a pretty penny for the Frostbite engine’s source code.
